Welcome to the Soft City
A City for Softies – For Travelers, Escapees of concrete and Imaginers Soft City is a bustling plush metropolis that brings to reality the ultimate creative city, made up of felt lopsided plush buildings. The structures stem from the place of imagination by people who truly care about how the city is built and navigated. We the founding folks of the Soft City hail from Toronto and felt we needed to create a city that was more malleable to our sense of play. We have salvaged our favorite components of city living and incorporated them into the design and planning of the Soft City — in the hopes of creating for ourselves, and others, a kinder and plusher homestead. In Soft City the boundaries between architecture, function, and art are blurred, pushing the boundaries of possibility. The continued growth of our Soft City is a collaborative process and we look to our neighbors and community to contribute and aid in the revolutionized of our urban centers to something more cozy and dreamy.
History of the Soft City
One cold winter night in 2004 a group of thinkers, educators and artists got together to discuss their fate and the fate of their city. They dreamt of a place where people could play and run without fear of skinning their knees on sharp corners. In their ideal world, buildings would not be straight lines and boxes made of brick and cement. Zoning and scale would be fluid, and people would participate in city planning regardless of age, sex, creed and ability. In this soft cityscape, the voices of citizens would be heard above the drone of Corporations. Together they would build a true utopia, where every surface would be inviting enough for a nap, and there would be no need for money or greed. It is out of these visions of grandeur that Upburg was born! Quickly felt was cut, plans drawn, and sewing needles poised.
